The night itself

The park as a whole on those two nights. You hear it: Dan Baker's PA for every batter and the night's announcements through the roof, the booth's organ and walk-up stand-ins, chants spreading round the bowl, the stretch sung, rain drumming on the roofs, and the sound changing as you walk from the bowl to the concourse to the plaza. The rituals: the tarp pulled on in the downpour on the 27th, the stands emptying into the rain, the 29th's return with God Bless America, and a real celebration - the pile, the press pouring out, motor officers, fireworks, the trophy stage and presentation, the lap, Harry Kalas singing High Hopes. Light and night: rain soaking cloth and shining on ponchos, the light banks glowing in the wet air, FOX's broadcast look, the 2008 skyline lit as on the nights. And Harry the K's opened up on both levels, with the left field corner filled in.

The little worlds

The park alive, place by place. The Third Base Gate with fans arriving on the game's clock, scalpers, peanut men, the State Police horses and FOX 29 live; the main concourse round both sides with lines at the stands, the drink rail, live TVs and named regulars; Ashburn Alley with the bullpens stacked as in 2008, relievers warming for every pitching change and Greg Luzinski signing at Bull's; the field-level rail with photographers, ball girls, bat boys and the grounds crew by the tarp; the First Base Gate and Robin Roberts; behind home plate as FOX showed it, the Diamond Club, vendors passing beers down the rows and Harry Kalas in the booth; and the Phillie Phanatic all night long - the four-wheeler, the hex, the rain dance with the ball girls, the hot dog launcher, the leap off the dugout at the last out. One people system for everyone, sound where things happen, and the crowd rewritten to run twice as fast. G for double speed.

Every detail

The ballpark as it looked for the 2008 World Series, from photos of Games 3-5: the stands rebuilt to the 2008 seating chart; the LED ribbon round the suite level (the batter walking up, the score, THERE'S ONLY ONE OCTOBER, 2008 WORLD CHAMPIONS at the end); bunting on the club fascia; MasterCard, Nike, AIG and the rest along the Terrace; Toyota's pitch speed board showing every pitch; galvanized handrails down every aisle. Outside, the gates as they're built: steel canopies over the bar gates, the twin light towers and the big green Citizens Bank Park sign over the Third Base Gate, stair towers and the steel frame. Concession stands on the main concourse, numbers and names on the jerseys, and flags that wave in each night's wind.

Game 5

The 2008 World Series clincher replayed on the field from MLB's data: every pitch on its tracked path, every play, the substitutions and steals, the rain of October 27, the scoreboard and the call, and Lidge, Ruiz and the dogpile. Scrub through the whole game, pause, speed up, or watch from the TV cameras (C).

Outside and the landmarks

Start in the Third Base Gate plaza (Pattison Ave & Citizens Bank Way) with the Mike Schmidt statue and the old Veterans Stadium Liberty Bell, and walk in through the gate. The brick facade and gates, the streets, the Linc and the arena, the Center City skyline, the left field scoreboard, the Liberty Bell sign, Ashburn Alley with the retired numbers, the ivy batter's eye, and night games under the lights.

The seating bowl

The field sunk 23 ft below the street and the stands around it: field level seats with aisles, seats over the outfield walls, the main concourse at street level, suites, the Hall of Fame Club, the two-tier Terrace deck under its roof and light towers, the right field Pavilion, backstop netting, and elevators (press E) up to every level.

The field

The playing field to the official dimensions, measured and oriented from aerial imagery: checkerboard mowing, the infield, mound, bases and all the chalk, the warning track, the outfield wall with Monty's Angle and its painted distances, 85 ft foul poles, sunken dugouts and the two-level bullpens in right-center.

Empty world

Tidewater's engine stripped down to its sky, clouds, sun shadows and haze over flat ground. First-person walking that climbs stairs, a free camera, day and night. A test block (stairs, a platform, three pillars) stands in for the stadium.
